فرایند نورد شامل گذراندن تکه‌ای از ماده از بین دو غلتک است. در اثر تنش فشاری اعمال شده توسط غلتک‌ها ضخامت ماده کاهش می‌یابد. دستگاه‌های نورد در مدل‌های دو، سه و چهار غلتکه موجود می‌باشد.
نورد یکی از بهترین و کاربردی‌ترین روش‌های شکل‌دادن است. نورد عبارت از تغییر شکل پلاستیک ماده از طریق عبور بین غلتک‌ها می‌باشد. انواع محصولات از قبیل تیرآهن و نبشی با مقاطع مختلف به وسیله این فرایند تولید می‌شوند. معمولاً این روش با فرایند آهنگری در رقابت بوده و برتری هر کدام بستگی به پیشرفته‌تر بودن فناوری آن دارد. اگرچه به‌طور کلی از نظر حجم و کمیت تولیدات، فرایند نورد در مقام اول فرایندهای شکل‌دادن فلزات قرار دارد. هدف مهندسی نورد فلزات عبارت است از تغییر فرم شمش یا ورق به شکل مورد نظر معمولاً محصول نهایی نورد، تولید ورق یا پروفیل است.
